Grammar teaching in Portugal
- Silva, Cristina da, Iris Pereira & Isabel Sebastião. 2019. Portuguese teachers’ perceptions of grammar teaching. Crossroads. A journal of English studies 24. 64–81. doi:DOI: 10.15290/CR.2019.24.1.05.
- Much change in the last decades, with grammar downgraded, but most relevant Portuguese teachers teach grammar frequently. Most secondary teachers use didactic pedagogy and most primary teachers are anxious about their subject knowledge.
- In fact, “formal learning” of Portuguese Grammar starts at Primary school (by the second year – average age 8) and goes on until the 9th year of scholarity (average age 14- 15). It is also formally taught in French as a foreign language, starting either on the 5th year or the 7th year (depending on the first foreign language pupils choose to have). I’m not sure if the same happens for English foreign language, but I can check with my colleagues (in fact, I teach French and French Linguistics at University, but since our students are mostly future teachers of languages at the secondary level, we are quite aware of what happens in that level…) [Information provided in 1997 by Filomena Capucho.]
